The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) celebrated World Environment Day at two schools in the district on Friday (June 5): Government LP School, Pang, and AMLP School, Malappuram.

The event held at Pang school brought back memories of the tragic road accident at Valparai in Tamil Nadu, where 10 members of the school’s excursion group lost their lives.

Kuruva panchayat ward councillor Ummu Habeeba presided over the function. School headmaster Ahamed Kutty, parent-teacher association (PTA) president Ali, KSPCB environmental engineer Varun Narayanan G., assistant scientist Latheefa, assistant engineers Sayooj and Mohammed Shebin spoke.

Malappuram municipal public works standing committee chairperson Haris Amiyan was the chief guest at the AMLP School function. Apart from Mr. Varun Narayanan, assistant engineers Basli Basheer, Shibin E.P., Athira and Arathi, and headmistress Sabeetha spoke.

This year’s celebration centred on the theme ‘Inspired by nature: for climate, for our future’, stressing the vital role of nature in addressing climate challenges and securing a sustainable future.

Elocution contests, poster drawing contests and quizzes were held in both schools. Saplings were planted on school premises. KSPCB staff presented waste bins to both schools as part of encouraging the habit of waste collection and segregation among children.
