Military pension board warns retirees against fraudsters demanding bank details

The Military Pension Board has issued a fraud alert to retirees and next of kin, warning them against disclosing sensitive personal or financial information to individuals posing as officials or agents of the pension system. In a statement cited on its X handle on Friday, the Board’s Public Relations Officer Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed, said it had received reports of fraudulent individuals attempting to obtain confidential data under the guise of processing pension-related benefits. According to the Board, retirees are being targeted for details such as Bank Verification Numbers, National Identification Numbers, bank account information and ATM card details. “The Board has received reports that some individuals are demanding personal details such as Bank Verification Numbers, National Identification Numbers, bank account details, ATM card information, and other confidential data,” the statement said. It strongly cautioned pensioners to avoid engaging with unauthorised persons or platforms requesting such information. The Board further clarified that it does not engage third parties to collect personal or banking information for the processing of pensions, loans, gratuities or other benefits. “The Military Pensions Board does not engage third parties to collect pensioners’ personal or banking information for the purpose of processing loans, pension payments, gratuities, or any other benefits,” the statement said. It urged pensioners and their families to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious requests for information to the appropriate authorities. “Any request for such information from unofficial sources should be treated with caution and reported to the appropriate authorities,” the board warned.
