A 32-year-old Scheduled Caste man is reported to have been beaten and hung upside down in a well by upper caste men in Hansi, Haryana. The men alleged that he had stolen a motor from a field, police said on Friday (June 5, 2026).
The victim, Baru, a resident of Sorkhi village, is a steel gate and door fabricator. In his statement to the police, he said the assault took place on June 1 around 12.30 p.m. while he was travelling from Sorkhi to Bhatol village.
In a two-minute video, the accused are seen tying the man with ropes, hanging him upside down in a well and assaulting him to extract a confession. The victim pleads for mercy as they lower him deeper into the well until he agrees to provide information. After pulling him out, they thrash him with sticks and bind him further.
According to the FIR, Baru stopped to relieve himself near the fields of one Surendra. There, he was confronted by Deepak, Pawan, Joga (a veterinarian), Pawan Mandasa, Surendra, and 3 to 4 other unidentified men all of whom are residents of Sorkhi.
The men allegedly accused him of stealing a motor, then kicked, punched, and beat him with sticks. Baru alleged that Surendra recorded a video on his phone as the men tied him with a rope, hung him upside down in a well, and tried to force a confession. He said they threatened to kill him if he reported the incident. Fearing for his life, Baru did not disclose the assault initially.
On June 4, he was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Hansi, suffering from severe pain. He gave a statement to the police on June 5. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered at the Bas Police Station. The charges include attempt to murder, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Hansi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said efforts were underway to identify the remaining accused and verify the viral video of the incident.
