Sports and Youth Affairs Minister O.J. Janeesh has said that the government’s priority is to nurture sporting talent within Kerala rather than spend heavily on bringing global icons like footballer Lionel Messi to the State. Speaking at a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organised by the Thrissur Press Club on Friday, the Minister said while Messi’s visit would be welcome, it would require massive expenditure on infrastructure. “Instead of spending crores to host a single event, we should invest that money in creating many ‘Messis’ in Kerala,” he said.

He added that it must be examined whether adequate infrastructure existed before attempting to host such events. “Whether Messi comes or not, our focus will remain on developing local talent,” he said. The Minister also indicated that a new sports policy is in the works to address gaps in the sector, with consultations underway with stakeholders. Priority will be given to improving grassroots infrastructure, reclaiming playgrounds and strengthening sports training, especially in schools.

Highlighting concerns over declining youth participation in sports, he said many playgrounds are inaccessible and even school grounds remain closed in the after hours. “Our first priority is to create more playing spaces, starting from villages, and bring children and youth back to sports,” he said.

He also said steps would be taken to subject the functioning and financial utilisation of the Sports Council to social auditing. Plans are being explored to utilise CSR funds to support training and ensure resources reach students effectively. He added that sports can play a key role in addressing issues like mobile addiction among children and called for renewed emphasis on physical education in schools.

On the issue of raising the pension age, Janeesh said the Youth Congress continues to oppose the move, maintaining its earlier stand. The minister also hinted at exploring public-private partnerships and new initiatives to re-engage youth, noting that tr
