DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA will need to invest more of its own resources in public health to sustain gains made over the past two decades, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC Tanzania Country Director Dr Mahesh Swaminathan said discussions between Tanzania and the United States are increasingly focused on co-investment and long-term self-reliance. He said the future of the partnership should be based on stronger bilateral cooperation, scientific exchange and greater domestic financing. “Tanzania already has excellent scientists, strong doctors and a strong public health infrastructure,” he said. The comments come amid broader global discussions about the future of international development assistance and the transition towards locally financed health systems. He also highlighted opportunities for deeper collaboration in medical research, technology and private-sector investment. American companies, he said, remain interested in exploring investment opportunities in Tanzania’s health sector, including pharmaceuticals and medical services. Health analysts say domestic financing will be key to maintaining progress in HIV treatment, disease surveillance and emergency preparedness as global funding priorities evolve.
