A 23-year-old man has had his hand severed in a home invasion in Sydney's south-west.

Four masked men broke into a home in Greenacre about 2am on Saturday demanding cash.

Police are searching for the offenders, who were last seen in a SUV heading east on Banksia Road.

A man has suffered "life-altering injuries" after he was attacked with a machete during a home invasion in Sydney's south-west.

Emergency services were called to Banksia Avenue in Greenacre, about 2am on Saturday, where they found a 23-year-old with his left hand severed.

Superintendent Rod Hart said four masked men armed with weapons, including machetes, forced their way into a family home by kicking in the front door.

"When that door was kicked in it had activated the home security alarm, which woke the occupants who were upstairs," he said.

"Those four males then ran upstairs to the first floor and it's at this point that the 23-year-old victim exited his bedroom and was confronted by the males."

Superintendent Hart said one of the men then struck him with what police believe was a machete, severing his hand.

He said the men then forced the victim's father to open a safe where "a large sum of money" was stolen.

They then fled the scene in a black SUV, which was last seen heading east on Banksia Road.

Superintendent Hart said the family ran a local business and were well known in the community.

"There is no indication that this is related to any organised crime," he said.

"What we believe is … these people were aware that there may have been cash on the premises and that's why they were targeted."

Superintendent Hart said the victim's parents and their two sons, aged 16 and 19, were present during the attack, but were not injured.

The 23-year-old victim was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital where he is undergoing surgery.

"This is a brutal, violent attack, which is extremely traumatic for the family," he said.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident is underway.
