What started as an effort to replace a stolen coffee machine has become one of the most remarkable public displays of support for a police officer in recent years. Within days of being cleared by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, veteran Hawks narcotics investigator warrant officer Karl Sander found himself at the centre of a fundraising campaign that has attracted more than R200 000 from South Africans determined to recognise his decades of service. A fundraising campaign initially aimed at replacing a stolen coffee machine for veteran Hawks investigator Warrant Officer Karl Sander has garnered over R200,000. The outpouring of support follows Sander's exoneration by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which investigated his claims of a hostile work environment and unfair targeting. Sander testified that the theft of his coffee machine was linked to an investigation into a large cocaine seizure and that a subsequent polygraph test used to implicate him was flawed.

After over 40 years of service, Sander was visibly emotional upon being cleared. Any funds raised beyond replacing the coffee machine will be donated to narcotics K9 training programs.

This story highlights public solidarity with law enforcement officers who face internal investigations and demonstrates a community's desire to recognize dedicated service.
