Ex-residents to hold memorial services near Japan-claimed isles
Former residents of Russian-held northwestern Pacific islands claimed by Japan will hold memorial services for their ancestors at sea and in the air between July 25 and Nov. 7, the prefectural government of Hokkaido said Friday.
Former inhabitants of islands in the northwestern Pacific, currently administered by Russia but claimed by Japan, are planning commemorative events. These services will take place at sea and from the air, spanning from late July to early November. The Hokkaido prefectural government announced these plans on Friday.
These memorial services highlight the ongoing territorial dispute and the historical connection former residents have to the islands.
