Kanlaon Volcano emits ash anew

The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted ash anew early Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The event was captured by the IP camera of PHIVOLCS' Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City.

Grayish plumes were seen rising up to 800 meters above the crater before drifting southwest.

"Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano," PHIVOLCS said.

In its Saturday bulletin, PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, also had one ash emission on Friday that lasted 14 minutes.

Five volcanic earthquakes including two volcanic tremors lasting three to nine minutes also occurred Friday.

A total of 2,451 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were also emitted by the volcano during the observation period of 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday.

Moderate plumes rose up to 800 meters tall before drifting in the southeast direction.

PHIVOLCS said entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed.

It said Kanlaon Volcano poses possible hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity. —KG, GMA News
