The Director General of Wildlife at the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, Gen. Khamis Adiang, said the decision not to reveal the person’s identity was made for professional reasons. “He is a well-known individual, but for professional reasons we chose not to disclose his name. He cooperated with us respectfully and agreed to hand over the hyena,” he said. Gen. Adiang said the hyena will be relocated to Bandingilo National Park today after delays caused by technical reasons, adding that a wildlife team is already on its way to collect the animal following an agreement with its former handler. According to him, the animal will first be taken to an enclosure near Mangala before being moved to a controlled area close to a military camp, where it will remain temporarily to allow it to readjust to its natural environment. “It will not be released directly into the wild. Instead, it will stay in the area for some time to acclimatize,” he said. He explained that the gradual process is intended to help the animal adapt before eventual reintegration into the wild alongside other hyenas. Gen. Adiang also announced plans for a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at educating residents on the legal requirements for keeping wildlife in residential areas, particularly predators and other potentially dangerous animals. “We also intend to engage the media to raise public awareness and inform the public that anyone keeping an animal… should obtain the necessary permits and documentation required for keeping such animals in a residential setting,” he said. He added that the campaign will focus on both legal compliance and public safety to prevent risks to communities. The hyena drew public attention after videos circulated on social media showing it roaming parts of Juba, raising concern among residents.
