The Council warned that any political party failing to complete registration by the deadline will be barred from participating in the upcoming polls. Chairperson of the Political Parties Council, James Akol Zakayo, said strict enforcement is necessary to ensure order in the political party system ahead of the elections. “The June 30th deadline remains final and binding. Any political entity that fails to fully complete its registration by this date will be disqualified from fielding a candidate or appearing on the ballot for the 2026 general election,” Zakayo said. He added that political preparedness is essential and that no exceptions will be made. “This is not the first election. If you are not prepared for this election, get prepared for the next one. The country will not be held hostage because one or two parties have not registered,” he said. Zakayo said the deadline is tied to the broader transitional process and could only shift if election timelines are extended. “At the end of the transitional period, there must be an elected government. When the election was extended last year, the deadline was pushed again. And if they extend the election again, the registration deadline will also keep shifting,” he said. He noted that registration remains open on a continuous basis, allowing parties to engage in coalitions or mergers even after elections. “Registration is a continuous process. You can still register and be part of the government to be formed after the election. There is merging and coalition before the election, and there can also be merging after the election,” Zakayo said. Political analyst James Boboya Edimond said reforms are still needed to strengthen trust in the electoral process. “We need political leadership, we need political will, and we need to address the fear among politicians. We also need a legal basis for these elections. Until we have a constitution in place, it affects confidence,” he said. He also called for stronger civic space and institutional support. “The government should ensure security infrastructure and allow political parties freedom to operate, mobilize, and engage citizens freely. Media also has a role in educating the public. We also need funding for electoral institutions,” he added.
