USS Oregon Arrives in Iceland for Service Visit

A nuclear-powered United States Navy submarine is scheduled to make a service visit to Iceland today, with the Icelandic Coast Guard providing operational support during the visit. As reported by Vísir , the patrol vessel Þór will accompany the USS Oregon to Reykjanes, where crew exchanges and other servicing activities will be carried out. What's the Story? The USS Oregon is a Virginia-class attack submarine, one of the most advanced classes of submarines operated by the US Navy. While powered by a nuclear reactor, the vessel does not carry nuclear weapons. The submarine was launched in 2020 and entered active service in 2022. According to the Government of Iceland, responsibility for the visit rests with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The operation is being coordinated with the Icelandic Coast Guard, the Office of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority and the Chief Epidemiologist. The government states that the visit is “the responsibility of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, but the Icelandic Coast Guard will conduct it in close collaboration with the Office of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority and the Chief Epidemiologist in accordance with established procedures. The preparation and implementation of the visits has been successful thanks to the close cooperation and consultation of the agencies concerned in Iceland and good cooperation with the U.S. Navy.” Similar service visits involve supplying vessels and exchanging crew members and form part of Iceland’s cooperation with NATO allies in the North Atlantic.
