Drivers in Iceland will no longer be required to provide a medical certificate automatically when renewing their driving licence from the age of 65, following regulatory changes introduced by Infrastructure Minister Eyjólfur Ármannsson . As reported by RÚV , the amended rules, which came into force on 29 May, raise the age threshold for mandatory medical certification to 75. What's the Story? Medical certificate requirement for licence renewals raised from age 65 to 75 New driving licence regulations took effect on 29 May Practical driving test period extended to 12 months after passing theory examination Renewal rules updated The changes were made by the Ministry of Infrastructure in cooperation with the Ministry of Health . Under the previous system, drivers were required to renew their licences every five years after turning 65, with a medical certificate typically needed as part of the process. According to the Ministry of Health, improvements in health and increasing life expectancy were among the factors behind the revision. Authorities also noted that medical certificates were routinely granted to people in this age group. The change is expected to reduce administrative demands on both older drivers and general practitioners. Several other amendments have also been introduced. People applying for a driving licence will now have up to 12 months to complete their practical driving test after passing the theory examination, extending the previous validity period. The updated regulations also extend the validity of driving school licences to five years and remove an equipment requirement for automatic instructional vehicles that authorities said was no longer being followed in practice. In addition, the rules more clearly state that professional drivers must complete continuing education every five years when renewing their licences.
