Latvia thinks about bigger penalties for attacking doctors
Three attacks on doctors occurred in May at the Emergency Care Clinic of Rīga East Hospital by patients and relatives. Doctors believe that the law should be expanded so that an attack on a doctor is considered an attack on a public official, which carries a prison sentence, Latvian Television reported on June 4.
Latvia is considering increasing penalties for assaults against medical professionals following recent incidents. In May, three separate attacks on doctors took place at the Rīga East Hospital's Emergency Care Clinic, involving patients and their relatives. Medical staff are advocating for a legal amendment that would classify attacks on doctors as attacks on public officials.
This proposed change aims to deter violence against healthcare workers and ensure their safety by imposing stricter legal consequences.
