Fearsome dinosaur-era marine reptile was the T. rex of the sea

Tyrannosaurus rex was a huge land predator during the twilight of the age of dinosaurs. But it was not the only T. rex that terrorized the Cretaceous Period. There also was a marine reptile named Tylosaurus rex – the T. rex of the sea – that rivaled its land counterpart in size and ferocity. Scientists ‌said they have identified Tylosaurus rex as a distinct species after a wide-ranging examination of previously discovered fossils. They made the judgment based on its enormous

Scientists have identified a distinct species of marine reptile, Tylosaurus rex, as the "T. rex of the sea" during the Cretaceous Period. This formidable predator, which prowled North American inland seas approximately 80 million years ago, rivaled its land-dwelling counterpart in size and ferocity. Researchers based this classification on its immense size, specialized teeth for efficient flesh-cutting, powerful jaw and neck musculature, and other unique anatomical features. The largest known specimen of Tylosaurus rex measured about 43 feet long, exceeding the size of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimens.

The identification of Tylosaurus rex as a distinct species provides a more complete picture of the apex predators that dominated marine ecosystems during the late dinosaur era.
