Deposed bishop Tychikos plans to take case to European court
Deposed Paphos bishop Tychikos’ legal representatives on Saturday said that he plans to take the case against his dismissal to the European Court of Human Rights once all legal avenues in Cyprus have been exhausted. They said that he will remain in Paphos “until all legal proceedings are completed” and will “exhaust every legal remedy, both before the Cypriot courts and, if deemed necessary, before the European Court of Human Rights”. Regarding his current place of residence,
Deposed bishop Tychikos intends to pursue his case regarding his dismissal to the European Court of Human Rights, according to his legal representatives. This action will be taken only after all available legal options within Cyprus have been explored. Tychikos is currently residing in Paphos as a guest in a private home, having vacated the bishopric earlier this week. His departure followed a request from Archbishop Georgios for him to leave the premises before his successor's enthronement. Tychikos was previously stripped of his administrative duties in May of last year after facing charges related to church protocol violations, though he retained his title as bishop.
The case highlights potential disputes over church governance and the application of human rights principles to ecclesiastical matters.
