University of Iceland and Hólar University to Merge
The University of Iceland and Hólar University are set to merge from 1 July after legislation paving the way for the move was approved by Iceland’s parliament. As reported by RÚV , the merger will see the two institutions operate within the newly established University of Iceland University Complex. Iceland's parliament has approved legislation enabling the merger of the University of Iceland and Hólar University, effective July 1st. Both institutions will operate under the newly formed University of Iceland University Complex. This consolidation is part of broader reforms initiated in 2023 to enhance efficiency and educational quality within the nation's higher education system.
Hólar University, with its focus on aquaculture, equine science, and tourism, will maintain some autonomy but will see organizational changes, including a new presidential role and a continued governing board. The government also plans substantial investment in new teaching facilities at Hólar and in the nearby town of Sauðárkrókur.
This merger aims to create a more robust and efficient higher education system in Iceland, potentially leading to improved research capabilities and educational offerings.
