A species of fish found in Mexico and Texas, the Amazon molly, reproduces entirely without males. These fish utilize the sperm of similar male species solely to trigger egg development, a process known as gynogenesis, but discard the male DNA, producing only female offspring that are clones of themselves. Despite evolutionary theories suggesting asexual species should quickly die out due to accumulating harmful mutations, the Amazon molly has persisted for an estimated 100,000 years. Recent research is beginning to shed light on this remarkable resilience, challenging the long-held notion that life without sex is inherently doomed.
The survival of the Amazon molly challenges fundamental theories of evolution, suggesting that asexual reproduction may be more viable and adaptable than previously understood.
