The fragmentation of political parties is increasingly undermining effective governance, transforming democratic discourse into a cacophony of voices. This phenomenon, previously analyzed by Giovanni Sartori regarding Italian political instability, is exacerbated by social media. These platforms not only spread misinformation but also erode political authority, fostering rapid mobilization of informal groups that weaken both party cohesion and societal unity.
This excessive multi-partism leads to governmental paralysis and citizen alienation from formal politics. Consequently, authoritarian figures and groups exploit this vacuum, promising to bypass systemic dysfunctions. While some analysts suggest fragmentation could lead to better representation if parties foster a culture of consensus, the article argues that such a culture is precisely what is lacking, leading to the formation of numerous parties driven by personal ambition and capitalizing on transient public anger.
The excessive fragmentation of political parties hinders decision-making on critical issues, leading to governmental paralysis and potentially paving the way for authoritarianism.
