Tiny “Fans-on-Chips” Could Cool Big Data Centers

Startup xMEMS Labs has developed a novel cooling solution for optical transceivers, critical components in data centers that manage the flow of AI data. These transceivers generate significant heat, and current cooling methods are insufficient for their compact design. xMEMS has adapted its "fan-on-a-chip" technology, originally designed for small electronics, to fit inside these transceivers. The micro-fan uses ultrasonic vibrations to actively pump air, directly cooling the transceiver's digital signal processor.
This innovation could extend the lifespan and improve the reliability of essential data center components, potentially reducing costly downtime and enhancing the performance of AI systems.
