TSMC Bets on Unorthodox Optical Tech
TSMC, yapay zeka veri merkezlerinde elektrik bağlantılarını optik bağlantılarla değiştirmek için Avicena şirketi ile işbirliğine gidiyor. MicroLED teknolojisi, lazer kullanan karmaşık sistemlerden kaçınarak düşük maliyetli ve enerji verimli bir çözüm sunuyor.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is partnering with startup Avicena to develop a novel optical interconnect technology for AI data centers. This collaboration focuses on Avicena's microLED-based LightBundle platform, which aims to replace traditional electrical connections with optical ones for improved speed, lower energy consumption, and reduced cost. The technology utilizes hundreds of blue microLEDs and imaging fibers, offering a laser-free approach to data transmission over short distances within server racks. This method bypasses the complexities and reliability issues associated with laser-based optical chiplets, which are currently a major hurdle in advancing optical interconnects for AI hardware. Avicena's system effectively creates a "miniature display screen" transmitter and a "camera" receiver for each data lane, simplifying the process of moving vast amounts of data required by modern AI computations.
This development is significant because it explores a potentially more cost-effective and reliable method for optical data transfer within AI systems, which could accelerate the performance and efficiency of future AI hardware.
