The long-lost tomb of Paul Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon who fought for Greek independence, has been rediscovered on Sfaktiria island. Bonaparte, inspired by revolutionary fervor in Bologna and the Philhellenic movement, secretly traveled to Greece in 1827 to join the Greek War of Independence. Tragically, he was killed at the young age of 18 before he could participate in the Battle of Navarino. His remains were preserved for years before being buried on Sfaktiria, but his grave was subsequently forgotten. A team of amateur researchers recently located the neglected monument, bringing this forgotten piece of Greek history back to light.
The rediscovery of Paul Bonaparte's tomb sheds new light on the foreign involvement and personal sacrifices made during the crucial early stages of the Greek War of Independence.
