While addressing a webinar on the future of Bangladesh's leather industry, CPD Fellow Mustafizur Rahman highlighted the financial struggles faced by many tanneries. He suggested that selling the abandoned tannery land in Hazaribagh could provide a crucial cash flow for these businesses, but existing restrictions on land sales need to be removed. Rahman also pointed out that the infrastructure and policy support provided to tanneries after their relocation to Savar have been inadequate. He emphasized the growing importance of Leather Working Group (LWG) certification and upcoming EU regulations like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will impact carbon emissions and potentially impose carbon taxes on the sector.

Addressing these financial and regulatory challenges is crucial for the sustainability and global competitiveness of Bangladesh's leather industry, especially as the country transitions from LDC status.
