Tanzania has solidified its status as a global leader in wildlife biomass, a position attributed to its rich biodiversity and dedicated conservation initiatives. The nation's commitment to international biodiversity agreements and the development of national action plans have been crucial in safeguarding its wildlife populations. Recent findings from the 2024/2025 National Wildlife Census, which was entirely funded domestically, further underscore this leadership. The census, conducted across diverse ecological zones, employed a multi-methodological approach to monitor 28 medium and large wildlife species.
This achievement highlights Tanzania's successful model of sovereign-funded, comprehensive wildlife monitoring, demonstrating that biodiversity conservation can be a core element of national development and security.
