European travelers are increasingly seeking authentic experiences and prioritizing sustainability and quality over crowded destinations, according to a new study by the European Travel Commission. A significant majority, 64%, already practice responsible travel behaviors and plan to spend more on their trips, with 80% intending to travel within Europe. Many are opting for less popular locations, longer stays, and off-peak travel periods to avoid congestion and enhance their experience. Safety, weather, deals, and local hospitality remain key decision factors, though concerns about overcrowding are also rising.
This shift in traveler preferences indicates a growing demand for sustainable and authentic tourism, prompting destinations to adapt their offerings to meet evolving expectations.
