Murders in Windhoek dropped by 14% during the first five months of 2026. Windhoek mayor Sakarias Uunona revealed this on Thursday during the Windhoek City Council’s fifth ordinary meeting. Uunona said crime statistics recorded between 1 January and 31 May show progress in efforts to improve safety in the capital. He said attempted murders decreased by 10%, robberies by 22%, theft by 7%, house break-ins by 27% and business break-ins by 1% compared to the same period last year.

Windhoek has experienced a notable decrease in several key crime categories during the first five months of 2026. Murders saw a 14% reduction, while robberies declined by 22% and house break-ins dropped by 27%. These improvements are attributed to heightened security awareness, active neighborhood watch programs, and the implementation of technology under the city's safer city strategy. However, the period also saw increases in vehicle theft, armed robberies, and assault with grievous bodily harm, with authorities citing factors such as unattended valuables in cars, isolated incident locations, and alcohol abuse as contributing causes.

The reported crime trends are significant as they indicate both successes and persistent challenges in maintaining public safety within the capital city.
