Towards universal urban patterns-of-life simulation
Understanding urban mobility requires models that capture how people interact with and navigate the built environment. We present a scalable, generalizable agent-based framework in which daily schedules emerge from the interplay between mandatory (e.g., work, school) and flexible (e.g., errands, food, leisure) activities, driven by evolving individual needs. Researchers have developed a new agent-based framework capable of simulating urban patterns of life and mobility. This model generates daily schedules by balancing fixed commitments like work and school with flexible activities such as errands and leisure, all influenced by individual needs. The framework's accuracy has been confirmed by comparing its outputs to real-world travel data from the 2017 U.S. National Household Travel Survey, showing strong agreement without requiring city-specific adjustments. The system is also highly scalable, able to simulate entire large metropolitan populations.
This scalable and adaptable urban simulation model can be used to analyze the impact of various scenarios, from infrastructure stress to disaster recovery and disease spread.
