A significant portion of butterfly populations in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, faces extinction within the next 50 years if conservation efforts are not consistently implemented. This alarming trend was highlighted by the Managing Director of the Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Park, Gerard Wong, who emphasized the critical role of butterflies in the ecosystem. Efforts to combat this include raising public awareness and breeding endangered species like the Clipper, Yellow Birdwing, and Giant Tree Nymph.

The park actively engages in conservation through breeding programs in three labs and public awareness initiatives such as the "Adopt a Chrysalis" program, releasing approximately 10% of the over 200,000 butterflies bred annually into the environment. Despite being a small, non-profit-oriented private company, the park relies heavily on ticket sales to fund its research and conservation activities, which are crucial for maintaining biodiversity.

The potential extinction of over 40% of Southeast Asian butterflies matters because they are vital pollinators and play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance and food chains that ultimately affect humans.
