Laser Chip Brings Multiplexing to AI Data Centers

Tower Semiconductor and Scintil Photonics have jointly developed the first single-chip dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) light engine specifically for AI data centers. This innovation addresses the growing need for increased bandwidth and reduced latency in AI infrastructure, which is transitioning from electrical to optical networking. DWDM technology allows multiple optical signals to be transmitted over a single fiber, a concept previously revolutionizing telecommunications but not yet cost-effectively implemented for AI's specific networking demands. The new chip integrates lasers, photodiodes, and modulators onto a silicon wafer, overcoming previous limitations in co-packaging optics for high-performance AI systems.
This advancement is crucial for enabling the next generation of AI computing by providing the high-speed, low-latency optical interconnects required to efficiently link processors and memory.
