বাংলাদেশ ‘নির্মাণ’ ও ‘সুবর্ণপুরাণ’

A recent trend in Bangladeshi literature sees historical novels focusing on figures and events from the past. While this pursuit of history is commendable for fostering self-understanding, many such novels struggle to balance historical accuracy with fictional narrative. Author Parvez Hossain's "Subarnapurana" is an example of a historical novel set between 1599 and 1610. Unlike many others, Hossain avoids letting history overshadow his creative vision, maintaining control over language, characters, and plot. The novel's true strength lies in its depiction of Sonargaon during the early 17th century, a period meticulously "constructed" by the author rather than merely presented. The central characters are not historical rulers but a Portuguese sailor, a Moroccan traveler, and a Bengali merchant, whose interactions and observations form the core of the narrative.

This literary approach matters as it offers a fresh perspective on historical storytelling, prioritizing imaginative construction over strict adherence to established historical accounts.
