Sindh's Right Bank Canal System is facing a severe irrigation water shortage, critically impacting agricultural areas in Larkana, Qambar-Shahdadkot, and parts of Balochistan during the crucial Kharif crop season. Shortfalls are significant across multiple canals, including the North West Canal, Rice Canal, and Dadu Canal. This scarcity is exacerbated by Punjab reportedly drawing more water than its allocated share from the Sukkur Barrage and Taunsa Barrage, while water levels rise upstream at Chashma Barrage. Despite Sindh's indent for substantial water release, a considerable deficit persists, with the Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal continuing to draw a significant volume.
The ongoing water deficit threatens millions of acres of agricultural land in Sindh and contradicts equitable water distribution principles, potentially leading to severe economic and food security consequences.
