Orthodox Christians are celebrating the Third Finding of the Head of Saint John the Baptist. This holy relic has a long history of being moved and hidden for safekeeping. It was first taken to Emesa during the persecution of John Chrysostom, then to Comana during a Saracen attack. Later, during the iconoclast period in the 8th century, it was concealed underground. In 850 AD, Patriarch Ignatius received a vision revealing its location, leading Emperor Michael to send emissaries who recovered the head. It was subsequently transported to Constantinople and placed in the imperial church.
This commemoration highlights the historical significance of relics in Orthodox Christianity and their journey through centuries of upheaval.
