In the 1940s, mother of three Valerie Hunter-Gordon from England was fed up with washing cloth nappies. She then used cotton wool and old parachutes to design the world’s first disposable nappy. Disposable nappies, initially designed for convenience, have become a significant waste management issue in Namibia's Oshikoto region. Limited formal disposal facilities mean that many residents, particularly in rural areas, resort to burying or illegally dumping these items. This practice is contributing to environmental pollution and straining existing waste management systems.
The improper disposal of disposable nappies poses a serious environmental and health risk, contaminating water sources and contributing to microplastic pollution in a region already facing water scarcity.
