Abolish Monarchies in Namibia!
URBAN AND rural development minister James Sankwasa has said that traditional chiefs are appointed from royal bloodlines, and are only accountable to royal families. This was after the IKhomanin community voted to remove their chief for selling land and for keeping donations. While Namibia is a republic, it has many traditional monarchies, kingdoms, chiefdoms and royal houses: Ovambo (Ondonga, Oukwanyama, Ongandjera, Uukwambi, etc); Herero (Ovaherero, Ovambanderu); Witboois;
Namibia's traditional monarchies, which hold significant political influence and control over land, are being scrutinized for their hereditary nature and role in contemporary governance. Despite Namibia being a republic, these traditional authorities, rooted in pre-colonial hierarchies and reshaped by colonial administrations, continue to operate as political actors. They are accused of reinforcing social inequalities and acting as a buffer that shields the state from direct accountability, contradicting the principles of popular sovereignty and decolonization.
The existence and influence of these monarchies raise fundamental questions about democratic principles, social equality, and the ongoing process of decolonization in Namibia.
