The Gate Is Not the End
WE ARE having the right argument about our prisons, but only part of it. The reports are familiar: holding cells crowded beyond capacity, crimes committed inside the very facilities meant to contain crime, a national conversation about whether our institutions reform people or harden them. The proposed answers cluster around the front end: alternative sentencing, community service, keeping petty offenders out. These are good answers but they only address who walks in. Almost
Namibian correctional facilities are making strides in rehabilitating inmates, offering programs and support within their walls. However, upon release, individuals often face significant challenges reintegrating into society. Many return to their communities stripped of social connections and facing a lack of opportunities, leading to a high likelihood of reoffending.
The issue lies not solely within the correctional system but extends to the community's role in supporting former inmates. The success of rehabilitation efforts is undermined when released individuals are met with silence and exclusion from families, employers, and neighbors.
This situation matters because the failure to reintegrate former inmates effectively contributes to recidivism and perpetuates a cycle of crime and incarceration, impacting public safety and the well-being of communities.
