Following a devastating fire that destroyed hundreds of homes in the Kalshi slum, residents are now resorting to collecting burnt wood charcoal from the debris as a primary source of income. Anowara Begum, who lost her home in the blaze, is seen sifting through the ruins with her grandchildren to gather charcoal for sale. The fire has left many, including Anowara and her daughter, who are sole breadwinners after being abandoned by their husbands, in a state of extreme poverty. Similarly, Nasir Mia, who previously earned a living repairing gas stoves, is now collecting charcoal after his seven-room dwelling, which also served as a source of rental income, was reduced to ashes. Both Anowara and Nasir are currently living under makeshift tarpaulin shelters provided as aid.

This situation highlights the devastating impact of the fire on vulnerable communities, forcing them to rely on salvaged materials for survival and underscoring the urgent need for sustained relief and rebuilding efforts.
