How often should we wash our hair?

Dermatologist Dr Adrian Seine backs fresh advice recommending daily washing for healthy tresses.

Dermatologists suggest that washing hair five to six times weekly is optimal for many individuals, particularly those in urban environments exposed to pollution and sweat. This frequency is supported by research from institutions like the Cleveland Clinic and is considered effective for managing scalp oil production. Contrary to popular belief, frequent shampooing does not inherently damage hair or cause the scalp to overproduce oil; shampoo primarily targets the scalp to remove sebum and buildup.

Conditioner, however, is designed for the hair shaft itself, applied away from the scalp to rehydrate and strengthen the strands. While natural alternatives like apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil exist, their effectiveness in thoroughly cleansing the scalp and managing oil buildup is questioned by experts.

Understanding optimal hair washing frequency can help individuals maintain scalp health and hair appearance by addressing the buildup of oils and environmental pollutants.
