The Ministry of Finance acknowledges these concerns and is actively reviewing the existing arrangement to implement a more equitable collection method. The current system charges fixed rates, with ordinary houses paying 18,000 Tanzanian Shillings annually and multi-story buildings incurring higher charges per floor. Certain properties, including those made of traditional materials, used for social services, places of worship, and homes of senior citizens, are exempt unless used for commercial purposes. Property owners without electricity connections pay through local government officials.
This policy change aims to ensure that property taxes are levied on those who own the assets, promoting fairer taxation and potentially reducing financial strain on renters.
