대하 농민소설 ‘금강' 한만수 작가 별세
“한만수의 15권짜리 장편소설 ‘금강’은 1956년부터 2000년까지 충북 영동의 농촌 모산마을을 배경으로 펼쳐지는 한 마을의 역사이자 한국 현대사의 축소판이라 할 수 있다.”(정지창 2020년 에세이집 ‘문학의 위안’) 1955년 충북 영동에서 난 고인은 17년간 은행과 보험회사에 다니며 틈틈이 습작하다 1990년 월간 ‘한국시'에 시 ‘억새풀'이 당선돼 전업 작가의 길로 나섰다. 2002년 실천문학에 장편소설 ‘하루'가 당선돼 소설가로도 활발히 활동했다. 특히 2014년에는 무려 12년6개월 동안 집필한 대하 장편소설 ‘금강'을 완간했다. 영동군 ‘모산'이라는 작은 마을을 배경으로, 1950년대부터 약 반세기에 걸친 한국 사회의 변화를 민중의 삶을 통해 그려낸 작품이다. 정지창 전 민예총 이사장은 금강을 두고 러시아 작가 미하일 숄로호프의 ‘고요한 돈강’에 견줄 만한 대하 농민소설이라고 평한 뒤 이 소설은 한편으로 “뚜렷한 주인공을 내세우지 않으면서 마을 사람 하나하나의 행적을 세밀하게 묘사해 밑바닥 농민의 관점에서 역사를 해석하고 재구성하는 독특한 효과를 거두었다”고 했다.
Novelist Han Man-soo, author of the epic rural novel 'Geumgang,' has passed away. Born in Yeongdong, North Chungcheong Province, Han began his writing career after winning a poetry contest in 1990. He later gained recognition as a novelist in 2002 and dedicated over a decade to completing his magnum opus, 'Geumgang.' This extensive work, spanning 15 volumes, chronicles the history of the fictional village of Mosan in Yeongdong from the 1950s to the early 2000s, offering a microcosm of modern Korean history through the lives of its rural inhabitants. Critics have lauded 'Geumgang' for its detailed portrayal of ordinary villagers and its unique perspective on history from the viewpoint of the common farmer, drawing comparisons to international epic novels.
Han Man-soo's passing marks the loss of a significant voice in Korean literature, particularly for his contributions to the rural novel genre and his detailed depiction of Korean society through the lives of ordinary people.
