The Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has urged the government to announce a 'green revenue policy' in the upcoming budget, citing significant fiscal disparities between fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. Despite facing a severe energy crisis exacerbated by excessive fossil fuel imports, Bangladesh's tax structure continues to favor traditional energy, hindering the growth of cleaner alternatives. CPD research director Khondaker Golam Moazzem highlighted that while some solar components have seen reduced duties, crucial supporting infrastructure like batteries and grid equipment remain heavily taxed, unlike the preferential treatment given to imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This discriminatory tax regime results in substantial revenue loss for the government and impedes the expansion of renewable energy, thereby disrupting environmentally friendly power generation.

Addressing this fiscal imbalance is crucial for Bangladesh to overcome its energy crisis, reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel imports, and transition towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious energy future.
