ARUSHA: T ANZANIA is betting that a major investment in tourism infrastructure across its vast southern safari circuit will help unlock economic growth, attract private investment and draw more international visitors to a tourism circuit long overshadowed by the country’s famous northern route. The government says it has spent 146.6bn Tanzanian shillings ($56m) upgrading roads, airstrips, accommodation and visitor facilities in some of the country’s largest wildlife reserves,
Tanzania has allocated approximately 147 billion Tanzanian shillings (around $56 million) to enhance tourism infrastructure in its southern safari circuit. This significant investment, a joint effort with the World Bank under the REGROW project, focuses on improving roads, airstrips, accommodation, and visitor facilities in key national parks like Nyerere, Ruaha, and Mikumi. The goal is to make these less-visited areas more accessible and appealing to tourists seeking wildlife experiences away from the more crowded northern circuit. New facilities, including visitor centers, campsites, and upgraded airports, have been established, alongside the acquisition of new equipment to maintain infrastructure and reduce costs.
This initiative aims to diversify Tanzania's tourism offerings, potentially boosting economic growth and spreading tourism benefits beyond the popular northern circuit.
