Bangladesh experienced its highest inflation rate in 16 months during May, reaching 9.42 percent according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). This marks the second consecutive month where inflation has exceeded 9 percent. The surge is largely attributed to recent increases in fuel oil prices, which have also driven up the cost of electricity. These price hikes are expected to place additional financial strain on low and middle-income households.
This persistent rise in inflation, outpacing wage growth, significantly impacts the cost of living and reduces the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.
