Huwel wins Mkwawa Rally to bolster title defence
IRINGA: THE 2025 National Rally Championship (NRC) winner, Ahmed Huwel, opened his title-defence campaign with bright colours after winning Mkwawa Rally, the 2026 season opener in Iringa today, June 7, 2026. Driving a Toyota GR Yaris, Huwel led the Mkwawa Rally right from the flag off to the event’s fastest time, winning all stages comfortably. Huwel, who was navigated by Rahim Suleiman, beat his closest challenger by 5 minutes after clocking 50 minute and 14 seconds Morogoro
Ahmed Huwel has successfully launched his National Rally Championship title defense by winning the Mkwawa Rally in Iringa. Driving a Toyota GR Yaris, Huwel dominated the event, leading from start to finish and winning all stages. He secured a significant victory, finishing five minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, Waleed Nahdi, who drove a Subaru Impreza N11. The rally, which served as the 2026 season opener, saw nine out of twelve participating cars successfully complete the demanding two-day course. Despite a dramatic incident where veteran driver Samir Shanto's car caught fire, both he and his navigator escaped unharmed.
This victory gives defending champion Ahmed Huwel a strong start to the season, setting a competitive pace for his title defense.
