The environmental damage caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been estimated at approximately 134 billion euros. This figure, compiled by the "Ecodia" environmental organization, accounts for the destruction of protected natural areas, forests, and national parks, as well as widespread land pollution from fuels, heavy metals, and explosives. Significant oil spills in the Black Sea have impacted vast marine areas, harming ecosystems and biodiversity. Furthermore, industrial accidents and the contamination of agricultural lands with mines and unexploded ordnance pose long-term threats to Ukraine's productive capacity.
The extensive environmental devastation highlights a critical, often overlooked, consequence of the conflict with potentially long-lasting impacts on Ukraine's natural resources and global food security.
