Clinical trials for a new weekly diabetes medication, retatrutide, have shown significant reductions in both blood sugar levels and body weight among patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug, which mimics three digestive hormones including GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon, led to participants losing over four times more weight compared to a placebo group over 40 weeks. Furthermore, patients experienced more than double the decrease in their long-term blood sugar levels (HbA1c). The study, published in The Lancet, also noted improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure, with most side effects being mild and gastrointestinal in nature.
This development offers a promising new therapeutic option for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity, potentially improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
