Hartung, previously a functionary of the NPD (now "Die Heimat"), was observed by the domestic intelligence agency. Hoffmann, currently working in the city's building department, will take over from the long-serving CDU mayor Heinrich Kohl, who is retiring. This outcome ensures the city remains under CDU leadership.
The election result is significant as it prevented a town in Saxony from electing a far-right leader, highlighting the ongoing political tensions and the role of extremist groups in local German politics.
