European researchers have observed a peculiar behavior in urban birds: they tend to keep a greater distance from women than from men. In controlled experiments involving 37 different species, birds allowed individuals identified as male to approach approximately one meter closer before flying away, compared to individuals identified as female. The study, published in People and Nature, accounted for potential confounding factors such as participant height and attire, yet the disparity in bird reactions persisted. Scientists are currently exploring various hypotheses to explain this phenomenon.
This finding is significant as it suggests a previously unrecognized behavioral difference in how urban wildlife perceives and reacts to humans based on gender, prompting further investigation into the underlying ecological and evolutionary reasons.
