Overlevende kindertransporten WO II: 'Niemand lijkt iets geleerd te hebben'

Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught commemorated the tragic child transports of June 1943, where nearly 1300 Jewish children were deported from the camp via Westerbork to the Sobibor extermination camp. Elementary school students participated in the annual remembrance, reading the names of the children who perished, with some finding the subject matter deeply impactful while others expressed keen interest in learning more. A survivor of the transport, 94-year-old Dolf Schaap, shared his personal story of how his family was saved by his father, who was a camp doctor at Westerbork. Schaap reflected that only a small fraction of the children on the transport survived and that his generation has failed to impart the lessons of the Holocaust to prevent future atrocities.
The commemoration of the child transports serves as a crucial reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust and the importance of learning from history to prevent similar events.
