The arrest was made on Thursday, June 4, 2026, when members of the Provincial Tracking Team stopped and searched a white Nissan truck along the R518 road in the Moletlane policing area. Law enforcement officials in Limpopo successfully intercepted a smuggling operation involving a large quantity of illicit tobacco. Acting on intelligence, the Provincial Tracking Team stopped a Nissan truck on the R518 road, discovering 333 master boxes of Hookah tobacco valued at approximately R1.5 million. A 49-year-old Zimbabwean national was taken into custody at the scene after authorities confirmed the goods were being transported toward Gauteng. In addition to the tobacco, police seized the vehicle, which is estimated to be worth R800,000. Beyond the smuggling charges, investigators determined that the driver was residing in South Africa without legal documentation. The suspect is scheduled to face charges related to the Customs and Excise Act and the Immigration Act at the Zebediela Periodical Court.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of South African authorities to curb the illegal trade of tobacco and enforce immigration regulations at the provincial level.
