North denies ‘harassing’ Dendias’ aircraft
Reports that Turkish Cypriot air traffic controllers “harassed” the aircraft on which Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias was flying to Cyprus overnight are “misrepresentations” of the truth , Turkish Cypriot air traffic controllers’ trade union leader Kursad Hudaverdioglu said on Monday. Turkish Cypriot air traffic control officials have dismissed allegations that they interfered with the flight path of Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias as he traveled to Cyprus. Reports suggested that controllers disrupted communication between the minister's plane and Larnaca airport, while also claiming that Turkish F-16s monitored the aircraft and other ministerial flights. Kursad Hudaverdioglu, a union leader for the controllers, characterized these claims as politically motivated distortions of reality. He maintained that the fighter jets were launched in response to an emergency situation and operated strictly within their designated airspace without violating any borders. The jets have been stationed at Ercan airport since March, following the arrival of an Iranian-made drone in the region. Greek officials have previously questioned the legality of this military presence, citing international concerns regarding the occupation of northern Cyprus.
The incident highlights ongoing regional tensions and the sensitive nature of military posturing involving NATO-aligned nations in the Eastern Mediterranean.
